Now that we have our blog set up and ready to go, you will be introducing your artist to the other members of the group. You will write a few lines about your artist in the first person. The guidelines are:
1. Include a salutation (say ‘Hello’ in the voice of your person). Could be in their native language or in their own personal style.
2. Let us all know what they are known for (What kind of art do they make? What is their most famous accomplishment?).
3. List two interesting facts about them (Tell us two things that you find interesting about them).
Here is an example for my artist of choice Henri Matisse
Bonjour mon ami! My name is Henri Matisse. I am an artist of many different genres but am best known for my paintings and paper cut-outs. I was initially labeled as a ‘fauvist’ (meaning : wild beast) but during the WWII era, my art was considered ‘degenerative’ by the invading Nazis and I was not allowed to show my work. Ms. Andreadis has a copy of my painting Large Red Interior (1948) in her kitchen. She is so tre’ magnifique! (Here is Ms. Andreadis at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, July 2007 seeing the original Matisse painting.)
Introduction is due by February 25, 2010.

Bonjour my friends. My name is Jean Baptiste Poquelin but of course you acn call me Moliere. It's got a nice ring to it huh? Anyway, I am a famous french playwright in the 17th century who is known for my many famous comedic plays with my best play being The precious maidens ridiculed which made me the most popular comic playwright of that time. Interesting things about me would be that I started out as a lawyer before I became a playwright. ReplyDeleteGood day my friends! My name is Lewis Hine. I am known for my investigative photographs for the National Child Labor Committee. My photos revealed the harsh truth of the Industry. I would travel through the streets, factories, mines, textile mills, and canneries to photograph the lives of the workers and tell their stories. I also joined the American Red Cross and photographed refugees and citizens. I made the public think deeply about just how hard the working class slaved to make the things they treasured and the kind of conditions the workers were forced to endure. I helped end child labor.

I studied many things besides piano, including voice, violin, instrumentation, score reading, counterpoint, and composition. I wrote and published many pieces for solo piano.

I am most famous for the song I made called "yankee-doodle." Two things that I think is very interesting is that when I was the age of 14, me and my family were performers, and I wanted my father to book us to perform but he didn't, until I bought a train ticket and prepared to run off myself. Happily my father did not want to run away, so he said that we'll just all go together. Also I fell in love with a very similar women that was talented in singing and comedian. Her name is Ethel Levey.

ReplyDeleteJe m'appele Kiki de Montparnasse! Oh excuse me, you speak English? Well, My name is Kiki. I was born in Eastern France, so it is only instinct for me to speak French. I am an artist, model, and a lover of social events. In addition, I sing in nightclubs, act, paint, and write. What can I say? I love the liberated culture of Paris! I was born in October of 1901, called Alice Prin, but what a boring name! I had to change it, right away. So many exciting things have filled my life- I worked in bakeries and shops as a teenager, but by the time I was fourteen, I was posing nude for sculptors! Let's just say, my mother wasn't very happy with me. Since then I have posed for many artists, like Alexander Calder and the ever talented Man Ray. I am the Queen of Montparnasse! Au revoir!

Bonjour! My name is Rosa Bonheur. My hobby is painting country scenes and animals, preferrably livestock or horses. It was hard to work in barns or ranches in a huge dress, so I had to get a permit from the police to be able to wear pants in public! My family was also credited by Charles Darwin in a study of his about Herediatary Genius, because my brothers and I all had the same artistic hobby.

Hello! My name is Mary Pickford. I am one of the most famous silent movie stars of the 20th century. You may know me by my nickname "America's Sweetheart" from my many years of acting and producing. I entertained Americans in the hard times of war, and even the good times in between. At only fifteen I made it to Broadway in David Belasco's " The warrens of Virginia" after being just any old teenage road performer. Only a few years after that I stared in silent films such as "The Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Rebecca of Sunny brook Farm". In the year of 1909 alone, I starred in fifty one movies. In April of 1909 I walked up to the Brooklyn brownstone where the American biography company was set up and asked for a job. They provided me with makeup, set up a screen test and gave a small part in a scene. D. W. Griffith asked me to come back the next day and offered me a pay of five dollars a day. I declined and said that I was a “Belasco actress and artist” and demanded ten dollars. To my advantage he agreed. And I rose to stardom from there.

ReplyDeleteBonjour! Comment allez- vous? My name is Jean George Noverre. I am a famous classical ballet choreographer. I am known for changing the way of a ballerina. When I choreographed I wanted the dancers to pour out all of the real emotions of the ballet and how they felt. I introduced the pas d'action, the step of the action. That is now known as pantomime, it helps further explain and understand the story of the ballet. This made dramatic possibilities for the ballet. I helped changed ballet from a divertissement, to a story with real human emotions. In 1786 I choreographed "La Fille Mal Gardee" which is now the oldest ballet. I will be forever known as "The Grandfather" of ballet.

Hello to all! I am Thomas Gainsborough. I am well known for my extremely realistic portraits, but what I enjoy most is landscapes. Wether it is drawing, sketching, or using charcoal or chalk, landscapes are my favorite. At first, I tried to make a living for my wife and daughters by just painting landscapes, but hardly any sold and I had to do something. Soon I started painting portraits for commission and had many clients. I am very easy going and I once said 'painting and punctuality mix like oil and vinegar.' Painting is my greatest passion, but music is another activity I am fond of.

Hi my name is Irene Castle (Foote). I am a ballroom dancer, as a child I studied dancing with Rosetta O'Neill, who taught me ballroom dancing. When I was a teenager I appeared in amateur theatricals, often singing "The Yama-Yama Man"—the song made popular by Bessie McCoy in the Broadway show The Three Twins (1908). Vernon and I met in 1910 at the Rowing Club in New Rochelle, New York, Vernon arranged an audition for me with Lew Fields, who hired me as a replacement dancer for The Summer Widowers, my first professional appearance. Despite my father's doubts about welcoming an actor into our family, Vernon and I were soon married in New Rochelle on May 28, 1911. We went to England for our honeymoon to meet Castle's family, but returned to New York in time for our show the August opening of The Hen-Pecks. The years flew by and Vernon and I did many ballroom dancing shows. We soon reached our peak in 1914, co-starring on Broadway in Irving Berlin's Watch Your Step. Vernon and I opened a nationwide chain of dance schools, and ran our own popular Times Square nightclub. All over the United States, couples danced our dances -- and the women enthusiastically copied my fashions and hairstyles it was quite amusing; to be loved by so many women and to be an inspritaion. We had such an tremendous effect on America's popular culture, and firmly established ballroom-style dance as a standard element in musical theatre.

Hello, my name is Lloyd Loar. I worked as Gibson's premier accoustic engineer from late 1919 to 1924,and I also taught at Northwestern University. Over my lifetime, I signed the label's of approximately 600 Gibson instruments, including guitars, mandolins, mandolas and mandocellos. These instruments revolutionized everything about the fields they were in; none came close to the audacity and the quality they were built with. With the mandolins especially, these new designs changed how mandolin family instruments were made forever. My design is the most widely copied mandolin design, and original instruments can go for as much as $250,000. Besides designing top of the line accoustic instruments, i also pioneered electric instruments, with several electric keyboards, and an electric viola. Electric Instruments are actually the reason i left Gibson... they thought the idea was crazy, even though the electric guitars they made in the 1950's and 60's are some of the finest ever made. I hope as you read more of this page you will appreciate my work as art.

Good evening, and a round of applause for you.
ReplyDeleteI am Giuseppe Verdi, a rather well known composer for operas. Perhaps you have heard of Rigoletto? Even those stuffy englishmen seem to love Rigoletto. I am not quite sure what this odd device is, but hopefully, with time, I shall master it, and the progression in my skills will be clear, just like with my work in opera.
It may seem odd, considering I'm known for my operas, but for a while, I was a senator. However, I took no part in politics, thus I was not anything like those politicians.
I met my first wife from this kind amateur, who let me play his piano right from Vienna. He had the most lovely daughter, and we married, having two kids that died in 1840.

Hello, my name is Sarah Bernhardt. I was born in Paris to my mother Julie Bernhardt; my father was not apart of my life due to the fact that my mother had many lovers. A friend of a friend got me into an arts school one very much like the one Courtney goes to. I was not a very successful student though. I am an actress, yes. but at that time it was not what you would say was my passion. Some people believe that my dramatic life lead to me fantasizing and exaggerating, which lead to my actress career. Thanks to Duc de Morny‘s influence I was transferred into the theater company in France Comédie-Française .during the beginning of my journey I caught myself doubting my abilities and trying to find myself. Luckily I was saved by my first role as Anna Damby in the revival of Kean. I’m glad to say that this was the true start of my whole career. Roles just came on from there.

Hello my name is Gabrielle Chanel but most people know me as Coco Chanel. I was born on August 19, 1883 in France. I was raised in an orphanage by nuns, who taught me to sew. I developed a very strong passion to create my own clothing. However in my early years I began to preform at clubs in France. I had a very popular singing act, that is where I got my nick name of Coco. I opened my first shop in 1910 selling hats. I then moved on to bigger things such as womens suits. In 1925 I made an incredible change for women, by creating a fashionable suit. I made coller-less suits, and well fitted skirts. It was a way for women to continue to look elegant but also be comfortable. I then went on to make the "little black dress" that can go from formal to casual. I am and forever will be a very well known fashion icon. H.D
