Using biography to do research helped me understand the society and the culture of where my artist liveed and work helped me truly understand VL's perspective on the world through his own eyes. The way he perceived everything, was in a way that cannot be described in words, but through music, and that is exactly what VL did.
Using a biography to research my era really helped me stay focused on the era that I was given. If I wasn't able to use a specific person, I think I would have gotten interested in other things I saw and would have strayed beyond my era. With Anna Pavlova's life, I was able to see exactly what a person's life style was in my era. I was able to follow them from birth to death. Using a biography really helped me stay focused on the research part of the project.
Using a biography helped me out a lot during this whole research project. Reading the biography's really helped me in understanding there lives and what happen during there time period. Without reading the biography I wouldn't had known anything that I did learn. I didn't even know there were dancers during the WWI ? I learned a lot.
While studying my person I actually started feeling as though I was taking part of their era. The hardships my person had doesn't compare to mine in present day. Her society made me realize how easy I have it now then she did. Culture was vaguely different from mine. This made me look up to my person with great pride.
Using biography research helped me understand the society and culture where my artist worked because everything around her affected her in different ways. Since Adelaide was around during the French Revolution, she created and supported art that had to do with the Enlightenment. Also, being a women, she had many obstacles she had to jump over. In my time today, discrimination against women still exist, but is not as prominent as it was in the 1700s, so therefore I am equally allowed to share and express my creativity much more freely than Adelaide was allowed.
Using a biography to understand where Bessie Smith came from and her era was simple. I knew from where she grew up and how she was treated by other people which helped me understand she was from the South because there still was Segragation when Bessie Smith was singing about the Blues. Also her music and videos that are also posted on youtube and many other sites show you where she is from and how she grew up. If you listen to her music she also talks about the troubles she went through which really tells alot.
Biography is thought of by most ninth graders to be a an uninteresting genre of writing, but this project has clearly proven that stereotype otherwise. We as a class have learned so much about our artists , and thus their eras. For example, I learned of a first-hand account from a struggling business man from the great depression, trying to make ends meet and to sell his product, but ultimately giving up and going to teach. This whole experience has been a very good lesson on the individuality of history. JB 7
Using biography to find information about all of our artists and scientists has been very interesting! I learned more about Neruda than I would have ever imagined. It took much work, considering my artist was not well known. After scrounging for information, I ended up learning so much, and having so much knowledge that I did not expect! By learning about Wilma Neruda, I learned of other aspects of history in the process. This was a great experience to help connect each era and too see how parts of history relate to one another.
My first impression of Clara Schumann was boredom. So what? She was some pianist who lived long ago. I had never played a piece by her, knew her only as the wife of Robert Schumann. After reading countless biographies of her, along with her and Robert's published diary, my opinion of her has completely changed. Learning how she grew up under the influence of the piano, taught by her father, and then growing into a fine pianist and composer. Defying her father to marry her true love (romantic sigh). Her story was better than any fiction! The biographies helped show me the circumstances under which she lived, the obstacles in her life, the culture surrounding her and how it influenced her. I really enjoyed learning about Clara Schumann.
Doing research this way helped me understand what it was like for an architect in France during the eighteenth century. It showed me what styles of architecture existed that interested Victor Louis. It also included some of his works that he is renowned for, such as the Bordeaux Theater. I think it also tells that he as an architect had obstacles, like musicians have obstacles, dancers have obstacles, etc. Though what I read up about him wasn't exactly from his perspective, it's like, take a look at what as a French architect faced in his life. It's like reading about what it was like for people of various occupations throughout history in what they went through. I think it is a good way to learn about a person, and what they faced in whatever field they went into because of their race, gender, where they're from, etc, during the time period that they lived in. I also think it is a good way to learn about what was happening in their native country as well as around the world. I find it very educational. S.P.W. bell 1
Alot of people don't give Biographies enough credit. To research my artist I gathered information from his biography. While there are many other methods of research, I feel that biography best sumerizes an artists life. The definition of a biography is "a written account of another person's life". By using Leo Tolstoys biography,I was able to learn about his entire life. This helped me piece together and infer what events made him a great artist.
Using an biography to do research helped me understand the society and culuture where my artist lives and works by really giving me an better understanding of what my artist has been through and what she has done to be where she was back then. I really got a clear focus on how important she was to the world of dance and the effect she caused on so many people back then. I got to see how she lived, and I was able to look at different sources to see what truly made her an artist.
The biography was very important, I mean we cant just guess about what time was like back then and biography give us the outlook to know about the time. I couldnt have know some of the important facts about my artist without the biography
By using a biography of Thomas Edison, I got to find out new things I never knew. With the things I found out about him really gave me a wider view of his other works besides the light bulb. I found out how young he was when he first began to realize his true potenical as a great and one of the great iventors in the U.S.A. So by using his biography, I got to share my greater knowledge of him with all of you.
I think that this is because it helps you understand were the person came from. With that, you are able to get how things worked during the time period your person(artist) lived in. I think its pretty cool to know how everything other than your person was like.
While my artist did not have a biography, reading first-hand sources about the time period (which we were convienently learning about in class as well) helped me understand what his life was like. I could see what day-to-day activites went on in his country, and what was happening around the world at the time, which influenced his art greatly.
If using biography to do research, your work becomes more of a story. Just using plain information is more difficult to understand. Biographies also give people information about all of their lives, including the artists society and culture. It helped me understand better because mostly the blogs were just easier to read. Using biography has helped me understand the time period in which my artist lived. Using a biography was helpful to get information about Noverre. It helped me understand the society because all of the different writers and journalists would say similar stories. The words they would use to describe the ballet years ago and who Noverre was, were very clear and understanding. The places i would research and look at how they were in the 1700's. Things were obviously very different back then but reading about them and seeing them really helped to fully get people and places back then. GY bell 1
Using biography was not that helpful to me on understanding anything.I guess that's because i'm really hard headed and stubborn when it comes to doing research projects.Ive learned alot about the society and culture where Edvard lived and worked by using search engines although i would recommend using biography to any one doing research projects im just lazy.
Using biography was helpful to understand society because it helped me get a better feel on the era that my artist occured in. Biography has also helped in studying my artists and reading the interview of the other artists, because I feel that it would probably be much more challenging for me to understand the things they did. If I did not use biography I think I would have a much harder time doing this research.
At first, I imaged my artist's art and culture as a modern playwright today. Since I didn't know what my artist went through at the time, I didn't know how to visualize him properly. I think that without the research on my artist, it would have been harder to do my biography in general. I wouldn't have the proper information to tell how successful he was.
At first, I thought why are we doing this project? Social Studies has nothing to do with art and what is the point of this. Biography helps you to get a feel for the time my artist was in and what he did to get through. Also, it helped me as an artist and see how easy I have it in the 20th century. Now, that all this is done I really believe Social Studies has a lot to do the arts.
I think that using biography was much more efficient at connecting with your artist's lifestyle and culture than just having to write an essay or do research. It allows you to connect more with your artist and see the world in their perspective. If you were to just do a boring research paper, it would not allow you to put as much detail and life into your work. In the biography, your artist has emotion and fleshed-out feelings and experiences in first-person, rather than an emotionless third-person essay. Even though the project was a little confusing and frustrating at times, I think I learned more info this way than any other way.
I don't imagine society changing much, give or take some customs. It seems as though I was wrong. Verdi's time seemed a lot more artistically connected, likely because there wasn't as big a selection, with the internet and all. Plus, I always thought of famous artists as either small name big egos, or super-humble people. Verdi seemed pretty humble, but he loved to dramatize his past, such as claiming that the French attacked the church he was born in, so his mother ran out with him in hand, leaving as the building fell. This is a lie, which seems odd for someone as humble as he. Gives a bigger personality to him, as though he's a large, smoked ham, with a side of milk tea.
Using a biographies was a huge help in this project. I feel that without reading the biographies and interviews I probably wouldn't be able to get deep into these artists and scientists lives. Including my own ( Maud Powell). Reading her biography I felt that I was able to be her from knowing her. Biographies are great sources of information. Not only do they offer you great insight about the author's life, they often tell you about the society and culture around them. They also can be very useful in understanding the people important to the person's life. By reading about how they influenced society, you can get a good idea of what their society was like. You can also get a idea of how different genders and races may have been treated.

The biography I read about my artist really helped me learn about August Bournonville and where he lived and the time and culture. There was much going on during the Revolutionary Era. In his biographies there were many explanations of what was going on culturally and economically. There was problems with the economy so it was hard for my artist to travel. The information we got from the biographies helped us with our interviews which really got us in the minds of the artists and so it was as if we were then at that time and we really grasped what was going on at the time.
By using biography to do research, I was better able to understand just how hard it was for my artist and others like him to do what they did. They did not have the means to just travel around on their own and take pictures whenever they wanted to. As much as they wanted to, they could not just take photographs or paint or play a music score however and wherever they wanted. They had to follow the rules of society to a minimum or else they were treated badly. That does not mean that many of the artists actually did follow those rules, but that was what was expected of them.
The biography helped me becuase I got to take on the voice of my artist. I had to think like her. That helped because I felt as though I was getting to know her in a way. It was as though I was meeting a new person for the first time.
Using biography to do research helped to show what my artists surroundings were like, and how they effected him as an artist. Social aspects play a big role in the kind of art you create, and can give a bit of a background on why you made it.
Using biography to reserch my artist helped a lot. I learned many things about her that I wouln't have b just researching her art work. I got to get a bit of insight to the type of woman she was and why she was that way.
While studying Samuel Hannaford i got to learn the culture and lifestyles of old Cincinnati or also known as "Cincinnatus". I also was able to see the world through Hannaford's eyes and see Cincinnati before it was developed into what we know it as today. His work contributed to much of the development of Cincinnati.
The use of biographies in my research really helped me understand the lifestyle of a black musician in the early 20th century. It's still tough now, but back then, no one wanted a black person to be successful. Coleman Hawkins faced a lot of challenges along his journey to greatness. Many people put him and others of the time down. They liked the music, but they didn't like the fact that African Americans were creating and playing it.
By using a biography to do research on David Garrick it helped me to better understand the society and culture in the 1700's. His family had very little money and he grew up in a modest home. He had big dreams in acting and as a playwright. Although some families looked down on acting as a profession, he was able to make a lving at it, because alot of people bought tickets and kept the shows going. He even became part owner in the Drury Theater and made more money as a business man too.
The biography is the whole projects information in my opinion. It is insiteful and tells us about the past and the life of our artist. Without it then we could only guess as to what our artist had to overcome or go through, and the biography is the way of telling/showing us that.
Using biography helped me understand where my artist came from and how she worked a lot. It helped me understand how her era was and how they treated certain people . The biography part gave me a more clearer understanding of how it was for certain people, mainly women. PBL7
Research helped me understand the society and culture of the early nineteen hundreds. In this time, the turn of the century, the great war was taking place so there was much nationalism at this time women were still looked down upon. Some American culture of this time was the hair styles like the finger wave.Another important piece of culture of this time was the change in clothing worn by women, mostly dresses would later become dramaticly shorter than the traditional styles.
I think that using biography to do research helped me understand my artist a lot more because you got to be the artist. You got feel how the artist would if he or she was in that certain position. It helped because you weren't just saying facts, you were reliving a past of someone's life. It helped understand the perspectives your artist would taken on certain situations.
When I simply used books and websites about the era Kiki lived in, I didn't really get a good feel of the person Kiki was. But then I looked into biographies, and there were many sources to help me. There were newspaper articles, novels, books, websites, and more all filled with very good information on Kiki herself. Also, writing the interview was very helpful because I had to put myself into Kiki's shoes. Instead of just listing out facts about wars and presidents and societies, I got to live in that time and experience what was going on.

It helped me in several ways. Using biographies helped me to understand how and why the society and culture was different in the early 20th century. It let me see why people were treated the way they were. My artist was black and he had a difficult time because it was apart of societies rules.Researching James Europe let me look a little deeper in his time and see how life was for African Americans. Using biography helped me understand where my artist came from and how she worked a lot. It helped me understand how her era was and how they treated certain people . The biography part gave me a more clearer understanding of how it was for certain people, mainly women.

ReplyDeleteI think that using biography to do research helped me understand my artist a lot more because you got to be the artist.
